Generic Top Level Domains (gTLD)

GTLD Extensions are domains that are meant to be for general purpose. These particular domain names are not associated with any one country. These domains can usually be registered by anyone, but a few of the extensions are restricted. What does restricted mean in this context? Well, restricted means that only a specific group of people are eligible to register a certain kind of domain, but these people are still not tied to a specific country.

Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD)

Country code domains originated from specific countries. Some of the registrars may try to require residency or a presence in the country of the extension, but most do not have any restrictions like this. Some extensions like .tv .me .cc and .co are open for anyone to register and have been re purposed for more general use because of how we perceive the extension even though they are actually country code specific extensions.
